Situation
Les Garrigues extends over 800 km2
and is situated in and around the regions of El Segrià,
El Pla d’Urgell, L’Urgell, El Priorat, La Conca
de Barberà and La Ribera d’Ebre.
It is a region with dry soils where olive and almond trees are
predominant and allow people from the villages to develop an
important sector, by producing varied quality oils thanks to
the characteristics of the Arbequina olive and the meteorological
conditions. As a result the production of the oil of Les Garrigues
is still considered among the best in the world.
Another source of work in some parts of the region is related
to the vineyard, which serves especially for the production
of Catalan wines.
However this is just the tip of the iceberg, there are thousands
and thousands of other aspects to be highlighted. For instance,
the fruit production of the areas irrigated by the channel of
Urgell, the quality of stone in the town of Vinaixa, the first
schools of the Mancomunitat in Els Torms, the prehistoric remains
of El Cogul and numerous other features which come together
to make Les Garrigues into something more than just a piece
of land.
